Pia Steigler

Pia Steigler is a postdoctoral research fellow at the South African Tuberculosis Vaccine Initiative (SATVI), at the University of Cape Town. Although being born in a low tuberculosis (TB) endemic country (Germany), Dr Steigler contracted TB during a young age, which lead her way into TB research. Her primary interest is finding strategies to improve TB vaccines and diagnostics by improving our understanding of the immunology to TB.

Dr Steigler holds a PhD in microbiology and immunology from the University of Otago in New Zealand, where her focus was on deciphering protective immune responses induced by Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) using mouse models. At SATVI, Dr Steigler is the scientific supervisor of several projects identifying correlates of risk and protection, TB vaccine induced immune responses and evaluating the diagnostic potential of TB biomarkers. Dr Steigler further lectures post-graduate students at the University of Cape Town in vaccinology and advanced immunology.
